Based in Frankfurt, Josef's background was with the German Federal Police where, following a period in the uniform branch, he joined the Criminal Investigation Department.

For a number of years he specialised in the investigation of the drugs and arms smuggling trade.

On leaving the police service in 1992 Josef worked as a self employed investigator in the private sector serving the needs of a number of large multi-national companies throughout Europe.

Josef has extensive experience and knowledge of both investigations and other security related projects within Germany. He is conversant in English.

Provides strategic and legal support for investigation of counterfeiting, trade mark and copyright infringement product diversion, data-protection, privacy, money-laundering and fraud investigation.

Head of intellectual property law at DJ Freeman and joint head with Clive Davies of the Information Technology practice, chairman of BrandSecure Limited and member of the British Brands Group's marketing group. Member of INTA and ITMA.

Has advised multinational companies on the reputation impact of aggressive litigation and managed high profile litigation in media sensitive cases and works with PR specialists to develop media strategies for any given event.

Advises major UK insurer's space and technology division on IT related claims and has litigated numerous IT and technology heavy disputes involving alleged misuse of copyright and trade marked materials.

Advises FMCG companies on the use of authentication technology and strategies for tracing and authentication of products collection of evidence and brand protection strategies. Works with leading packaging companies on product authentication and protection of the supply chain.

Leads the international trade mark prosecution practice at DJ Freeman and advises on national and international aspects of trade mark and copyright infringement.

Recently litigated the Reed v. Reed high court litigation relating to use of trade marks on the Internet. (Subject to appeal by both sides and pending reference to the ECJ)

Consults with wide range of companies on trade mark copyright and IT issues and advises on data security and information protection matters.

Advised the Application Service Providers industry consortium on data protection matters and is a frequent speaker at the International Symposium on Economic Crime (Cambridge), having delivered papers which include the economic impact of counterfeit and the link between Counterfeiting and Economic Crime
